"Into The Monster's Lair" (2000) written for Diane Cawein Barger.Piano - Miriam YutzyNotes from the composer: CaweinLair (2000)--pronounced 'Kay-win-Lair'--derives both title and musical character from the heroic Scandinavian legend of Beowulf. The music, although not strictly programmatic with the story, attempts to capture in musical performance the spirit and ilk of Grendel's mother, the vengeful woman-monster.In the legend, Beowulf and his band of Geats (Swedes) sail to Castle Heorot to help the Danes rid the castle of the blood-thirsty monster Grendel. Grendel would stalk up from the misty swamp land each night killing and devouring the inhabitant of Heorot. no sooner had our hero slain the beast Grendel, when Grendel's mother, a hideous woman-monster, showed up to seek revenge for her son. She snatched up one of Beowulf's men and fled to a nearby lake, in which (or under which--you know how the Danes favor their lake spirits) was her lair.Beowulf plunged into the monster-realm and ended up in the woman-monster's great hall under the lake. They struggled, and by using an ancient warrior's sword he found in the lair--one wrought by giants of old--he slew the woman-monster. At the moment of her death, a sudden and brilliant light blazed forth in the hall, revealing many wondrous and precious treasures. But Beowulf, in true hero fashion, took only the jeweled hilt of the ancient war-blade with him back to the surface, since the sword had dissolved in the woman-monster's blood when he killed her.
