Mario Lanza (1921-1959)"You and the Night and the Music" (Schwartz-Dietz). Recorded December 17, 1951, for The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.Lawyer turned composer/film producer Arthur Schwartz may be best remembered for penning the song "That's Entertainment", with lyricist Howard Dietz. Many years earlier, however, the duo had a hit with "You and the Night and the Music", from the 1934 show Revenge with Music. Quite a beautiful melody on its own, the song surely benefits from the unbridled urgency Lanza brings to it. Although it seems his version is rarely mentioned in discussions of the singer's most-loved recordings, it has long been a favorite of mine and bears the hallmarks of Lanza's best work in the genre of the popular song: loads of romantic feeling, unaffected delivery, scrupulous attention to matters of shading and nuance, exemplary diction, and a wholehearted beliefin the music and words he sang.
