Email me at Rafemalach@gmail.comHere's my interview with Dave:I hail from Toronto Ontario.I released an album last year called songs of sense and colour. I tour and play 5-6 shows a month. I'm playing New York City and Oakville, which is big time. 20 minutes from Toronto.Rafe; That's where we live.Dave: I've been listening to music my entire life. I love music with a story to them. I love songs so much, so my intention is to contribute songs as opposed to singing other peoples songs. Rafe: Who are some of your biggest influences?Dave: Influences include good old Canadians like Neil Young, The Band and Gordon lightfoot. Also Wilco, Jeff Tweedy, My Morning Jacket. A lot of soul music these days, anything mark ronson produces. The dap kings, Sharon Jones. (Mindless babble). Rafe: So, the people that like your stuff, what other stuff would they like.Dave: Hopefully just my stuff.Rafe: Who would you most want to go on tour with.Dave: Neil Young. Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Dylan, the Grateful dead if they were still in a functioning form. Phish, so many bands, Jeez louis, James Brown. Johnny Cash. Rafe: What are you favourite albums and favourite songs?Dave: Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, Johnny Cash God Murder and Love, Sky blue sky by wilco, Gold by Ryan Adams, I love the band Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the moon, Dub side of the moon, My Morning Jacket's new release.Rafe: Aren't they punky?Dave: Kinda Psychodelic. I like the I'm not there soundtrack. Rafe: Songs?Dave: Lay lady lay is one of the sexiest songs ever written, either way by wilco, misunderstood by that band also. I'm liking the song moonshiner by Dylan, I'm drawing a blank.Rafe: That's fine, how about unsigned artists?Dave: Zach Salberg.Rafe: Zach Shepperd?Dave: No, Salberg. Robyn Dell'unto. Mike Celia. Sean Pinchin.Rafe: Trick of Disaster?Dave: Trick of Disaster. Rafe: Nice Guy. I notice you're on the recent Quarry compilation.Dave: I'm doing some work with them, their working with me to get some funding and managerial stuff. They manage before the flood, the Arkell's. Rafe; Blabbering.Dave: The Midway State, Vanderpark, Megan Hamilton, Deromantic. Adam Jesin. Urban Preacher. Jordan Saver. Rafe: All people who we hope to be on the show eventually. That's a wrap I guess.Performance is Dave Borins's version of living a fantasy. The weight of the world is lifted from his shoulders, and his personality is revealed, naked, unchecked and unapologetic. In addition to his original compositions, he also draws on an enormous and eclectic repertoire of great songs by other artists. Dave's energetic performances have long been a closely held secret among a small group of people in Toronto and Montreal, but he is starting to make waves.Dave grew up in Toronto, but his songwriting and performances have been shaped by his experience working as canoe trip guide in Algonquin National Park, and attending school in Montreal. Although folk, classic rock and roots music is the cornerstone of his musical background, Dave refuses to confine himself to one genre. His musical education has taken him to the Far East, South America, and the South Pacific, and as a teenager, he developed a reputation as a jazz vocalist, singing in an ensemble that included Sophie Milman, before she became a top-selling jazz artist. More recently, Dave has been exploring children's music, working as an early childhood educator and becoming an expert campfire singer. Through it all, Dave has developed a unique voice, and style that is all his own.If you haven't heard of Dave Borins, you will soon. He's been making heads turn and hands clap in small venues all over Toronto and Montreal, but you can't contain energy like this for long. Dave Borins is definitely one to watch.
