Andreas Düben the elderFuneral music for Karl X, 1660: Miserere mei DeusSopran: Susanne Rydén, Eva NässénAlt: Anne Pajunen, Jerry MazoTenor: Tore SunessonBas: Mats Persson, Kjell HenrikssonOrchestra: Corona ArtisConductor: Hans DavidssonThe five-part Miserere mei Deus differs markedly from his burrial music for Gustav II Adolf, Pugna Triumphalis, written nearly thirty years earlier. Polyphony and the polychoral form have been replaced in this later work by homophonic music in an even beat which, most closely described, declaims the penance psalm with short passages in triple time. The music is reminiscent of Italian madrigals. The harmony is noriceably restrained, above all, typical of the times, coloured by shifts between major and minor with few chromatic elements. The outer parts have elements of motivic dialouge, and these are the only parts in the extant material which have an inscribed song text.
