Walking into a building filled with antiquities had always brought a surreal sense of having lived in the periods of the exhibits. Kota Tinggi Museum received 50,000 visitors last year and is considered as one of the most important historical reference of the Johor Sultanate. Opened to the public in 2002, the museum was officiated in 2004 and had a usable space of 6,840 square metres. The spaces on the two storey building display a vast variety of rare exhibits from the 19th century to the present, ranging from century old porcelain, big paintings on canvas, ancient musical instruments to house models. We spent an hour and a half to tour fully appreciate the display of ancient tools with the aid of the curators brief.Kota Tinggi marked a very significant role for the Johor Sultanate as it had been used as one of the main administration centre for the Malaccan Sultanate line since 1587. The museum will enthral you with its complete explanation on how the Malaccan Empire settled and magnified its rule in Johor and how the conflicts between Portuguese, Achehnese and other super powers took place in the span of hundreds of years. The Malaccan Sultanate line of descendents also ended in Kota Tinggi when the last ruler Sultan Mahmud Shah was assassinated by his own admiral Megat Seri Rama who was also known as Laksamana Bentan. This history is known as Sultan Mangkat Dijulang.Besides the old historical view, the museum also highlights the lineage and recent important occurrences in Johor. The cultural entity of Johor includes a certain identity in its architecture, music, costume and dances. On the second floor, the annual Kembara Mahkota Johor (Johor Crown Prince's Royal Expedition) makes history with the Crown Prince's pursuit to bridge with the local community through adventurous pursuit, something unusual we got to witness in a museum while looking at the modern era's theme amongst the age old artefacts. With the curator's help, he explained briefly on the whole tour, a service which we appreciated much as the museum opened its doors at 9.00 am until 4.00 pm everyday except on Fridays. Books about Johor and other historical aspects can also be found reasonably priced at the lobby. The museum has received visitors from all over the world and what it keeps inside is truly precious and the knowledge you acquire here will become an invaluable piece which you take back with you for life. We were just beginning to discover the real Johor.
