John Tyler High School senior De'Marcus Walker wasn't trying to do anything noteworthy when he picked up a tuba as a youngster and tried to play. He just loved music. Walker, already the recipient of more than a dozen music awards, recently landed the highly coveted, top-ranking "first chair" position in the 5A Texas All-State Symphonic Band. It was the second year in a row to secure a position playing tuba in the honor band. TISD officials said the district is filled with talented young musicians, but Walker's "first chair" standing in the statewide competition may be a first.
