This is my favorite song by Gordon Lightfoot. On that last studio album before his hiatus he returned to his roots. The original flavour of road music, trains, ships, geese migrating, an uneasy sort of 'rambling' music. 'Restless' returns to those things and sums them up, only with more wisdom and maturity. Gordon recalls that 'Restless' feeling that still calls him, when he hears a train whistle or the like, but he now understands the need for a place to call home. A need, after all the animals that wander their whole life have laid down to rest, to return to the places "we love best". He can "feel the restless yearning of the geese as off they roam", and he "trades that for a warm bed and a place I can call home". The old wanderlust has come full circle. Amazing talent with words Gordon had, so much depth to them.
