"Jedermann" is a play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal based on the medieval morality play "Everyman". Written in 1911, it is performed every year at the Salzburg Festival. The Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) set to music six monologues from Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann" for baritone and orchestra between 1943 and 1949. In the first monologue, Jedermann, who has just been visited by Death at dinner, finds his guests all gone, and summons his servants to help him prepare for the journey ahead, the journey to which Death has called him.
