Vancouver Film School "What Matters to You" Competition Entry ** Please watch the higher quality version of this video at http://citypal.ca/aao.mov **Hi, thank you for watching my entry for the VFS scholarship competition. What matters to me is never giving up my dreams even when I am against all odds.So when I found out that VFS was offering a scholarship competition for the 3D Animation and Visual Effects program of my dreams, I decided to roll up my sleeves and show VFS my motivation! After all, when I found out about the competition, I had only about 5 weeks to get something done and no software or technical expertise of any kind in 3D, besides my day time job, of course. All I had was an idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted it to look. How's that for against all odds?Since I had never done any 3d work or animations before, and I also had to learn the tools as I went along, it quickly become totally overwhelming and I had to simplify a lot of ideas and visuals for the sake of completing on time. It was made especially for the VFS/Youtube scholarship competition, in hopes that I can win a scholarship for the program in 3D Animation and Visual Effects! I want this really bad and I think that learning means much more than just going to school, it all comes down to how much you want something and hard you're willing to work. That's why I decided to give my best for these 5 weeks that I had and see what I could achieve in 3d animation. I could learn so much at VFS! But still can't afford it.Unfortunately, the delicate textures got pixelated by the youtube upload, please watch the higher resolution version here(34MB): http://citypal.ca/aao.mov The main character in the feature is the number zero and he will achieve his success destination even after many attempts by the other characters, which are all odd numbers, trying to stop him from achieving his goal. The original scenes were: intro, sea of odds, odd beach, the great odd wall and the city. Only the first 3 barely made it in. I got really excited with this project and I will continue to work on it, check back every once in a while for updates. This has become more than just an entry for a competition! It was all done with my beaten up MacBook laptop (yes, I was that guy rendering at the bus stop :) and I finished exporting the video 5 minutes before the deadline. It was a real close call. Please feel free to ask any questions and if you like, please leave a comment! Thanks again!About the process:This project was so much fun for me and the process too. Along the way I learned basics of modeling for the canoe and character, concepts on rigging (building and animable skeleton), texture creation and painting, changing scene items through programmable expressions (ocean motion), character morphing for facial expressions lighting and of course... animation.I have also learned about camera mapping and more about the concept creation and process, storyboarding, video formats and compression. I was happy to have completed on time, since I originally had begun working on 6 scenes, during the last week I realized that they would not make it and shifted the focus to the scenes that were more developed. I am happy that I could put things together in a way that makes sense, even though I think the full project with the 6 scenes would be really great to reinforce the idea of against all odds. I worked countless hours on this project and it was hard work but it was also very fulfilling, it is a confirmation that this is what I want to as a career and gave me a great understanding of what is entailed in a commercial production and an idea of the time it takes to do certain core things. Great experience!---------------------------------------CREDITS (I ran out of time before completing the credits, here they are):* Animation & All Visual Elements - Fernando Drabik* Music: Revolve by HisboyElroy, used with permission* Thanks to the members of C4dCafe and CGSociety forums, special thanks to Nigel and Per-Anders* Special thanks to Vini Pabon for his support and taking the time to do some research on the audio front.
