He based the character on the thousands of orphans who had to fend for themselves in the ghettos of the large cities and smaller towns. As Yisrolik says, "I am a child of the ghetto, a reckless kind of guy". Before the war, he had parents and a home but he lost everyone and everything in the ghetto: he is reduced to selling cigarettes and saccharine which he smuggles into the ghetto. Yisrolik wears a coat without a collar, underwear made from sackcloth, and rubber boots because he has no shoes. He is totally alone, like "the wind in the field, and yet, he whistles and he sings, but when no one is looking he wipes away a tear from his eye."Leib Rosenthal, a well-known poet, was active in the cultural life of the Vilna Ghetto. He was deported to a concentration camp in Estonia and was killed in 1944, hours before the Soviets liberated the camp. His sister, Chayelleh, first sang this song in February 1942 at the second public theatre performance in the Ghetto.
