Vocalise is the second movement of Concert a quatre, written in 1990-1991. The music for Vocalise is actually a transcription of a much earlier (1935) Messiaen choral work, and therefore sounds very different from the rest of Concert a quatre. About the video: the choice of Sanibel is a personal one. Although what is essentially a home movie of a middle-aged couple finding shells on a beach surrounded by tranquil natural beauty has nothing to do with Vocalise, it is quite in tune with the spirit of the music, and it is my hope that there is a synergy producing a sum greater than the parts. If you like the music, I hope youll get the CD, which also contains Les Offrandes Oubilees and Le Tombeau resplendissant, both written in the 1930s by Messiaen, and also Un Sourire of 1989, which contains a reprise of his 1930s style, along with some of his later birdsong period. Speaking of which, there are lots of birds in the video, so theres some link to Messiaen after all. Enjoy!

I use epiphany in it's secular meaning here... although it could be used in religious context, it doesn't really matter to me how you interpret it. Please Rate!

"'Romance' for piano was composed in 1948. In the following year (1949), a revised edition was dedicated to Yasuji Kiyose, the only composer from whom Takemitsu ever received guidance on his work. No information on its first performance is available. The published sheet music is a revised edition by English pianist and composer Paul Crossley, based on the editions of 1948 and 1949."(excerpted from sheet music [Schott edition])Performed by zfletch
