I videoed this in the town of Kosiv, state of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, in the summer of 2004. It was part of the annual Ivana Kupala (Summer Solstice, or Feast of St. John the Baptist) celebrations. There was a small Hutsul folk festival, and also that weekend was the Sheshory Music Festival in a field in nearby Sheshory.This band can be found at the Arkan restaurant in Sheshory in the summertime--or at least, they were the house band, if not anymore. . .

This is a very traditional Hutsul tune; there are set verses to this melody, but also, the tune can go on and on with improvised verse. . .I videoed this in the town of Kosiv, state of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, in the summer of 2004. It was part of the annual Ivana Kupala (Summer Solstice, or Feast of St John the Baptist) celebrations. There was a small Hutsul folk festival, and also that weekend was the Sheshory Music Festival in a field in nearby Sheshory. The violinist is a virtuoso Hutsul player who can (most likely) be found, in the summertime, playing with his band at the Arkan restaurant in Sheshory.
