http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsessionGravy Waltz, co-written by legendary jazz bassist, Ray Brown and original Tonight Show host, Steve Allen, has been a jazz waltz favorite since the 1960's. Steve Allen was personally supportive of all up and coming jazz players... this included the Hessions.Over the years the LA Times had several features on the Hessions. After one rather nice article we arrived at a jazz club, where we had an ongoing engagement, to find a rather large package had arrived with our names on the label. We were very surprised to see Steve Allen's name and address as the sender. We were very grateful to find a large amount of CD's, tapes, manuscripts and sheet music which were written by Steve Allen and his various musical partners. We were absolutely blown away by the great music! Steve Allen also developed a jazz show for PBS. Some videos can be found on YouTube, one that I can think of is Oscar Brown introducing Phineas Newborn as well as several Miles Davis cuts from the 1964 Steve Allen show. One of our favorite Steve Allen stories involves "The Piano of MaryAnn Jackson". That is for another day.Jim plays the jazz waltz, (Gravy Waltz) while recording at the Word of Mouth Studio in New Orleans.
