NEW HAVEN — With a full slate of face painting and finger pointing on the agenda, both sides of the national debate on immigration met at City Hall Saturday morning in separate events focused on the Elm City Resident Card program. In the first floor atrium, you had a city-sponsored family day celebration. Outside on the sidewalk, you had protesters at a podium decrying the dangers of illegal immigration. For good measure, you also had local reality TV stars singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. At the center of it was the resident card program, which started last year and grants access to various services, such as parking. Its open to all city residents, including illegal immigrants. An estimated 6,000 cards have been issued. On Saturday, the city invited local families to City Hall to learn about a host of local programs, including the resident cards. There were refreshments, drawings for prizes, free books for children, face painting and musical performances by the Taubl family of New Haven, which gained notoriety recently on the reality TV program Americas Got Talent. To me, as an immigrant myself, I think the cards are a good idea, said Roberto Reyes of New Haven, who is a U.S. citizen. He was there with his wife and three children.About 50 people turned out for the event, which also featured tables with information about local YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs and health clinic services. Its a good thing, Andre Woods of New Haven said of the resident card program. They should have rights, too, he said, referring to illegal immigrants. That was not the sentiment out on the sidewalk. They just want (citizenship rights) handed to them. Its wrong. Dead wrong, said Armand Serio of West Haven, who heads up a group called USA Not 4 Sale.Illegal means illegal. Anyone can understand that, Serio announced from the podium.Perhaps a dozen people gathered for the protest, including representatives from anti-illegal immigrant groups such as Community Watchdog Project and the Federal Immigration Reform & Enforcement (FIRE) Coalition.Dustin Gold, president of Community Watchdog Project, pointed out Mayor John DeStefano Jr. as DeStefano entered City Hall. Why is there a Mexican flag on the New Haven Green? Gold shouted at DeStefano, who did not respond. Gold proceeded to call DeStefano a bum and a joke, because of his stances regarding immigration.Golds father, former New Haven police officer Lou Gold, said the appearance of the Mexican flag on the city Green epitomized the conflict over the issue. They want to turn this city into an illegal domicile, Lou Gold said. This mayor is encouraging and validating people breaking the law. Were letting the whole population know you can come to New Haven and no one will do anything about your illegal status.I think its despicable, Lou Gold added. This isnt going to be an easy battle, here in a blue state. Youre fighting against the tide.Jeff Lewis of North Carolina, national director of FIRE Coalition, called illegal immigration the largest invasion in world history and said it divides Americans. Its not a race issue. Its a nationality issue, Lewis said. People who want to come here and make a better life for themselves ought to do it the right way.As for DeStefano, he said a lot of city residents are participating in the resident card program. He also wants to expand the program to help residents open bank accounts using the cards. He dismissed the arguments of the protesters.Theres a powerful message of family in City Hall today and a powerful message of hate outside, DeStefano said. Family and hate. Ill take family.
