A conference of audio recording experts unveiled at Stanford University in California the 1860 audio recording done by French inventor E.L. Scott de Martinville of the song 'Au Claire Le Lune (In The Moonlight)' which predates the Thomas Alva Edison recording of 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' by 17 years. This video captures that original 1860 recording which became available on the Internet just hours ago. Pictured is the 'phonoautograph' invented by Frenchman Scott de Martinville, with the recording edited in sequence to a 1931 recording of an excerpt of Claire De Lune for comparison. The oldest recording runs only some 11 seconds so is presented in this video 3 times for better appreciation. Credit for this historic feat of finding, and sharing the first ever recording with the world properly goes to the audio experts initiative firstsounds.org . Scott never intended to be able to play back the audio squibbles etched on a plate backened using soot from an oil lamp but the audio experts were able to get a high resolution digital scan of the plate and have managed to extract the song recording. One report says it is thought the woman's voice is that of tht Frenchman's daughter. Wonder of wonders indeed!
