The final for my MIDI 1 class at Ex'pression College for Digital Arts. I downloaded the trailer for BioShock (developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games) from gametrailers.com and completely redid the sound design.Turn your speakers up, this isn't compressed to crap like everything these days (meaning it's "quieter").Full Description:Game: BioshockCinematic used: "X06 Trailer" released August 21, 2007Software/Hardware used: Logic Pro 8, Kurzweil K2500RS, Novation ReMOTE 61 SL MIDI controller, AKG Perception 200, SM58, SMbeta57aSound Design Detail: Actually having already played this game, I knew what the original sound design was like and I decided I would follow suit and see just how similar I could make it with the deadline and equipment I had. In the game you play a human in a real world environment, so I wanted to keep everything fairly natural and organic. I accomplished this by either using real world samples from Logic Pro 8's Apple Loops library or doing foley recording at home.All foley was recorded into Logic Pro 8 at my home using various mics into an Alesis Multimix8 USB routed to the built in input of my iMac. For the voices of the main character and the Big Daddy, as well as the pipe wrench sounds and the Big Daddy's footsteps I used an AKG Perception 200. For the narrator's voice and the Little Sister I used an SM58. And finally for the bone cracking and syringe sounds I used an SMbeta57a. The music and mood were set to be dark to bring the viewer into an uncomfortable headspace in order to intensify the frightening cinematic.Music Detail: I used music fairly sparingly throughout the majority of the trailer. At the start I composed an orchestral/choral piece that guides the viewer on a journey to an underwater city. This piece was written in a minor key and an odd time signature (5/4) to let the viewer know that they were going to an unusual and unhappy place. When the city is reached the orchestral piece fades out and an ambient sounding synth pad (in the same key, with no time signature now - more timed with the video crossfades) was brought in to further darken the mood as the viewer is brought down into the city and introduced to the main character. Once the viewer is in the main character's first person view the music is dropped until the very end when he is knocked out/killed. I think the sound effects and foley really carry the video through until nearly the end so trying to incorporate music during the first person sequence would have clouded the project and detracted from the visual. Also, once in the first person view I really only wanted to hear what the main character might actually hear rather than "off-camera" music. I then bring back that same synth pad and repeat the chording from the beginning, then cut it for the main title to appear.
