I choreographed this duet in 2003 as part of a large ensemble work (twelve dancers) set to three tracks from Dulce Pontes' "O Primeiro Canto." I bought the album on a whim (I liked the cover). I'd never heard Dulce Pontes, but before Track #1 ended, I felt like I'd cracked open a stone and discovered a new color. Dulce approaches ballad-like music concepts with an instrumental purity and emotional fierceness rarely heard in America. You need not understand a word of Portuguese to know exactly what she's singing about. I'm intrigued by this fairly unsung culture whose contemporary recording artists manage to tackle sentimental subject matter without collapsing under the weight of schmaltz. I devised "First Love; Second Sight" as an excuse to choreograph to this music. Dulce makes keen spiritual sense, singing on behalf of love's transformative power and "the awakening of all the senses beyond the fifth." Three particular lines most directly inspired the premise for "First Love; Second Sight": From "First Canto": "My love was an honest shepherd, my love was my first."; from "Lost Heron": "Darkness fell across my eyes of sorceress, of starfish, of sky, of full moon..."; from "Warrior Soul": "Without you my love I can't see the sky."Choreography: Paul ChristianoCostumes: Kristin MitchellLighting: Gregg EssexMusic: Dulce Pontes; Leonardo Amuedo ("Garca Perdida")Dancers: Tarah Brown, Paul ChristianoWork-In-Progress Premiere: Friday, June 20, 2003, Melissa Thodos & Dancers Presents: New Dances 2003 @ Ruth Page Center for the Arts, Chicago, ILWorld Premiere: Thursday, March 11, 2004, Melissa Thodos & Dancers Presents: Momentum 2004 @ Harold Washington Library Auditorium, Chicago, IL
