Raised in his father's Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, music store, Fred Waring studied violin as a youth and was a member of his high school glee club. He formed his first professional band around 1916, a six-man string outfit called Waring's Banjazztra. After graduating from college he took the group to Detroit, where it began to attract the attention of the local music crowd. In 1922 he left the engineering program at Penn State to pursue a career as the leader of an eleven member orchestra that soon became one of the 1920s' most popular bands. In 1923 they had their recording career took off when "Sleep" became a hit. In 1925 they followed this with "Collegiate," a huge hit that captured the carefree college atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. Now one of the nation's most popular bands, the Pennsylvanians appeared on Broadway, starred in an early sound film called Syncopation in 1929, and then became stars on radio in the 1930s.Waring's early repertoire consisted of peppy rhythms, novelties and period vocals. By the 1930s, however, the band had become much smoother and more musical. Waring also began to feature more and more choral music in his performances.
