1958: Shirley Bassey recorded this single, 'Hands Across The Sea' as the Side (A) with Side (B) of the single being Shirley's Number 1 HIT, 'As I Love You.'After Shirley's 1957 debut LP, 'Born To Sing The Blues', she made it clear with her Manager of the time, Michael Sullivan, that she wanted to at least choose some of the songs she would record. Of course we know that recording this particular single would radically affect her career for the better, but Shirley almost didn't get the chance to record 'As I Love You' at all.Shirley actually discovered 'As I Love You' herself. This song was written in 1955 by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston, but despite being recorded by several american artists it never became a hit. Shirley knew this was a great song and was determined to make it a hit of hers. Shirley's producer for this recording session was Johnny Franz and he also thought this would be a great song for someone to record, but not necessarily Shirley. He provided an innovative arrangement on this song reminiscent of the early work of Burt Bacharach. But, Franz was set on 'Hands Across The Sea' as the Side (A), and at this time in the music industry they wouldn't combine two ballads on the same single release. Shirley know that if she didn't record this song at this time, she might never get another chance at it. Shirley thus made every attempt to change Franz' mind on this, and FINALLY after two weeks of pursuation she was able to talk him into going against the music industry and allow her to sing both ballads on this single release. After they had recorded the song, with Franz' arrangement and Shirley's emotional singing, they knew they had something special! Despite their efforts, the song didn't take off right away but in February 1959 when Shirley made a chance appearance as a last minute substitute on 'Saturday Night at the London Palladium, the song immediately climbed to #1.Despite not making the same headway on the music charts as 'As I Love You' I very much like 'Hands Across the Sea'. This song gives Shirley's fans an idea of the choices made early in her career and how all these choices along with her experimenting with a wide variety in musical vocal styles all contributed to the mega star we know today.

Also the song reached 79 in the European chart and the video of the song brought her the 12th video which was most watched in 2007-2008 in the worldwide. After the big success of "...Dan Sonra", she released "Kenar Süsü" as her 2nd single from her self-titled album.
