I recently copyedited a book about Bob Dylan's songs. It inspired me to dig up this tune. It's hard to write a "topical" song, in part because news gets old so quickly. But it's also challenging because many people will dismiss music that's "political." I guess it's slightly absurd (and presumptuous) for me to try and take the point-of-view of a soldier returning from war, but at times I feel like the irony of my generation is not a scathing, moral irony (like Dylan's), but rather a form of cowardice--if no one tries to say anything substantive in music, then we can hardly expect substantive action in life.
