John Newton, a slave owner and captain of a slave ship realizes one day that slavery is wrong and has a conversion so to speak. He pens the lyrics to the existing melody as an act of redemption--we all seem to need that once in a while.Amazing Grace is also the unofficial national anthem of the Cherokee Nation. During the forced repatriations from their ancestral lands to Oklahoma by the U.S. Government thousands of native peoples were forcibly marched over 2,000 miles and over 4,000 died along the way. This became known as the Trail of Tears. They were not allowed to stop and attend to their dead so instead would quietly sing Amazing Grace as a way to honor the passing. It has been translated into many native languages including the native form of sign language. It is really beautiful to watch.LYRICS:Amazing grace, how sweet the soundThat saved a wretch like meI once was lost but now am foundWas blind but now I see'Twas grace that taught my heart to fearAnd grace my fears relievedHow precious did that grace appearThe hour I first believedThrough many dangers, toils and snaresI have already come'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus farAnd grace will lead me homeHow sweet the name of Jesus soundsIn a believer's earIt soothes his sorrows, heals his woundsAnd drives away his fearMust Jesus bear the cross aloneAnd all the world go free? No, there's a cross for ev'ryoneAnd there's a cross for me
