Performer - Deanna DurbinMusic - Ross Parker & Harry Par-DaviesLyrics - Hugh CharlesThis song was written in 1940, while England was going through its darkest days in WWII. The song became an instant patriotic hit.At the time of WWII, Deanna Durbin was one of the most popular actresses in the world. She was especially popular in England. She was Winston Churchill's favorite actress. He would celebrate British military victories with screenings of Deanna Durbin movies. One week in 1942, the Odeon movie theaters in England had a Deanna Durbin week where nothing was shown but Deanna Durbin movies.Another one of Deanna's fans was fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. He wrote Deanna an open letter asking her to ask President Roosevelt, on behalf of the youth of America, to stay out of WWII. Sadly for Benito, Deanna chose not to honor his request. Both of Deanna's parents were from England, plus she was born in Canada before emigrating to America. Though this movie was made in 1940, a year before America entered the war, Deanna chose to show her allegiance to her mother country with this special ending to "Nice Girl?", filmed exclusively for her British fans. This is also the one time in any of her movies that Deanna Durbin sang directly to the camera, meaning that she is singing this song not to the audience on screen, but instead to the audience in the movie theater.*Note: As a rule, I don't put up videos on Youtube that others have already posted. However, the other versions of this song are sped up and in the wrong key, robbing Miss Durbin's voice of much of its warmth. It is out of respect for Miss Durbin's artistry that I make this post so that her fans, both old and new, can finally hear this song as she originally performed it.*
