This Island Life examines aspects of life on the island of Ikaria. As isolated as the island may seem out on the eastern edge of the Aegean Sea, Ikaria has a vibrant cultural life as the program for the 'Icarus Festival for Dialogue Between Cultures' shows. In 2008, the Festival kicked off with a production by Azart [http://www.azart.org/] and 'Ship of Fools' of their show, 'Jason, The Magic Quest'.Filled with great music and songs, lots of laughs, high drama and of course, plenty of Greek Tragedy, 'Jason, The Magic Quest' is currently on tour throughout the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea until October 12, 2008. You can view the full schedule of tour dates at the Azart web site [http://www.azart.org/Tour08.html].I was lucky enough to catch the production at the Ikarian port of Evthilos, and filmed bits and pieces of the show which you can see in the accompanying video. As you can see, 'Jason...' was staged on the ship itself. If you look carefully, you can see the boat rise and fall with the ebb and flow of the waves even though it is tied securely to the wharf. The music used throughout the video was either recorded live during the show, or is taken from the CD, Music For The Ship Of Fools (Vol. 1, 2006-2008) by I Fratelli La Strada. The CD is available after each show, along with a range of other merchandise, and contains music from 'Jason...', and other 'Ship of Fools' productions.====================================Jim Lesses was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia, where he has lived for most of his life. Short segment from Patrick Rotman's "68" (2008).Images from major 1968 protests:West Berlin (April 11): Radical students blame an anti-student campaign in the papers of the Axel Springer publishing empire for the assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke, the most prominent spokesperson of the left-wing German student movement of the 1960s. This led to attempts to blockade the distribution of Springer newspapers all over Germany, which in turn led to major street battles in many German cities.Rome (March 1): Student protest "Valle Giulia" in Rome leading to long period of violent dispute.Columbia, New York (April 23): Students at Columbia University protest against the school's alledgedly racist policies, 3 school officials are taken hostage for 24 hours.London (April): Over 20.000 people demonstrate against the Vietnam war and express their support for Rudi Dutschke.Madrid (April): Students at the University of Madrid protest against the involvement of police in student demonstrations, protest against the dictator Francisco Franco's regime, and demonstrate about trade unions and worker rights.Tokyo (March): Japanese students protest against the presence of the American military in Japan because of the Vietnam war.In the first months of 1968, in many Western and developed countries an "internationale of youth" becomes visible. Its members, mainly students, listen to the same music, read the same books, praise the same icons and adopt the same attitude - Revolution is in the air.
