In this short clip from 1980 Bakalis is seen performing a classic rebetiko song. His performance shows his roots as a true rebetis who lived the life and paid his dues. He is shown discussing how the Greek nightclubs at that time, had become respectable establishments where breaking of plates was forbidden, and families now come to. Babis Bakalis had a long career as a writer, performer and recording artist of Greek laiko music.A prolific songwriter, he wrote 1,500 popular greek hits between 1947 and 1988. He never became as popular as some of his contemporaries like Bithikotsis and Kazantzidis, but wrote many of their songs. This is the only known video of this great but underrated talent. Bakalis was born in Thessaly, on June 20, 1920. He took up music at an early age and moved to Athens in 1944. In 1947, he wrote his first song "Κάποια Μάνα αναστενάζει" ("A Mother is sighing"). Over the next years, and especially during the decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Bakalis wrote the music to over 1,500 laika songs which were made hits by such noted singers as Grigoris Bithikotsis, Sotiria Bellou, Vangelis Perpiniadis, Petros Anagnostakis and Stratos Dionysiou. Of special note was his partnership with lyricist Kostas Virvos.Bakalis was greatly influenced by Indian music, producing some of the best known "Indogyftika" songs. He died on March 26, 2007.
