Dr. Caroline B. Salido, featured guest artist at the PASCO cultural show and dinner fundaiser, plays CZARDAS, by Vittorio Monti (1868-1922) /trns. Elmer Cabotage (b. 1964) Program notes:Vittorio Monti (1868-1922) was an Italian composer. He was born in Naples where he studied violin and composition at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella. Around 1900 he got an assignment as the conductor for the Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris where he wrote several ballets and operettas. Monti scored the most important success of his professional life with the Hungarian-style Czardas, which was originally composed for either violin or mandolin and piano. Originated in Hungary, czardas is a traditional Hungarian folk dance, characterized by a variation in tempo: it starts out slowly (lassú) and ends in a very fast tempo (friss, literally "fresh"). There are other tempo variations called the ritka czardas, sűrű czardas and szökő czardas. The music is in 2/4 or 4/4 time. Monti's Czardas has 5 variations in tempo, and is quite virtuosic. This evening's performance is a transcription of this famous work by Filipino composer and pianist, Elmer Cabotage.
