Filmed August 2008. The Senator Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve was formerly the Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation's Merrick Incinerator and Landfill. The dump was closed in the early 1990's, capped, planted, and opened as a park to the public in 2000. Also known locally as Merrick Mountain, this 115 foot high former landfill now offers a kayak launch into the Meadow Brook, and a Fishing Pier on the lower sections, and two man-made ponds on top, circulated by an agricultural Dempster windmill, attracting ducks, herons, owls, seagulls, and other birds and wildlife. From its top, you can see panoramic views of Freeport, Jones Beach tower, Jones Beach Theater, Merrick Bay, marshland, the Manhattan skyline, and the Meadowbrook Parkway, as well as most of the South Shore of Long Island, New York. You'd never think you're walking on top tons of garbage, but the methane vents on the top are the clue.
