This is the seventh installment of our Ireland 2007 videos. This chapter covers our three days on the Iveragh Peninsula. After leaving Killarney National Park we headed towards Kenmare to drive clockwise around the Ring of Kerry. Our intent was to stop in either Portmagee or Ballinskellig in order to try and arrange a trip to Skellig Michael. The scenery was incredible on that first day, but the sadly the fog was kind of thick making it difficult to appreciate. We decided to spend the night in Ballinskellig and the Ballinskellig Inn (an old hotel with a fabulous pub attached). We woke up to a spectacular sunrise and then hiked down the beach to Ballinskellig Castle. After breakfast we called the captain and he said that the tides were low, but the weather was perfect so he said to meet at the docks at noon. With some spare time we backtracked towards Caherdaniel to take advantage of the clear sunny skies. Thank goodness we did, because we had no idea what we had missed in the fog.Back at the pier, we were disappointed to find that the tide was at a seasonal low and that the boat that would have taken us was beached. Rather dejected we set off towards Portmagee. We had originally planned to leave Iveragh after Skellig Michael, but decided that we didn't want to miss it so we found a room in Portmagee (at the lovely Portmagee Heights). After hiking all over Valentia Island (See Chapter 8) we drove around the Ring to Cahersiveen where we visited the stunning ruins of Ballycarberry Castle.Music:McSherry/O'Connor - Both Ghé (this is from the remarkable album Tripswitch)Altan -- DúlamánBill Brennan - Farewell to Tarwathie

This is the eighth installment of our Ireland 2007 videos. This chapter covers the day we spent on Valentia Island.Since we were unable to go the Skellig Michael from Ballinskellig, we decided to spend another night on the Iveragh Peninsula to try again the next day.We took a room at the lovely Portmagee Heights in Portmagee. We drove to Valentia Island over the bridge in Portmagee.First we hiked past a few hundred sheep to the "tower" at the head of the island. We'd expected the ruins of a castle, so it was a bit of a disappontment to find a modern structure, but the spectacular views quickly erased any regrets.Next we drove to Geokaun Mountain, the highest peak on Valentia at just under 900 feet. There we saw an incredible panoramic view and the stunning Fogher Cliffs.Music:McSherry/O'Connor - Rose in the Gap (this is from the remarkable album Tripswitch)
