Mel Torme`(1925-1999) who was he? Nicknamed "The Velvet Fog" and later "The Velvet Fox." Mel was born on September 13, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to immigrant Russian Jewish parents. He first sang professionally at the age of 4 with the Coon-Sanders Orchestra singing, "You're Driving Me Crazy," at Chicago's Blackhaws restaurant. Between 1933 and 1941 he acted in the network radio serials. He wrote his first song at 13 and 3 years later his first published song "Lament To Love," became a hit recording for Harry James and his orchestra. Mel had one of the most beautiful voices a man could be allowed to have, he combined it with flawless sense of pitch, improvisation and he was one of the best "scat singers" in the business. This is a form of vocal nonsense words and syllables or without words at all. This type of singing gives singers the ability to sing improvised melodies and rhythms creating the equivalent of an instrumental solo using their voice. Ella Fitzgerald was one of the best scat singers and when she and Mel sang together they were likely to cut loose during a swinging up-tempo number with several scat choruses, using their voices without words to improvise a solo like a brass or reed instrument." Mel actively sang and performed from 1933 to 1999. In February 1999 Mel was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 3 months later in June he would have a stroke that ended his life.
