Want to know a secret? I never celebrated my eighteenth birthday....... Cue: tears and violins etc. etc. However, I do remember staying home (pretending to revise for my A-level exams) and watching this offbeat & brilliantly shot BBC documentary about time - probably wondering why I wasn't partying and also musing (as this doc eloquently portrays) what the coming years would bring.... One of the good things about adulthood was discovering Germany's greatest export: CAN. Accompanying the footage are two fused snippets of a much longer jam from the Suzuki era. This track proves yet again that Can could groove like a bastard. For trivia fans, the title of this track is a references to a London Underground journey made with Annie Nightingale to record a BBC Maida Vale session.

'Der' Kommissar was a double A-side (with the track Television) by the NDW band The Wirtschaftswunder, who may have been based in Germany, but had members from Italy, Canada and Czechoslovakia. Based on a 60s TV crime show, this magic slice of new wave is here fused with images from Colonel March Of Scotland Yard (starring Boris Karloff complete with eyepatch) plus various other bizarro spliced in imagery.

Edgy, neurotic post punk from The Netherlands answer to Talking Heads - The Tapes... Why have their albums never been issued on CD? I also made a video (ages back) for their anthemic track Inside Out, but that has vanished into some other dimension.... Here is some imagery of a nifty 'cause n effect' experiment from the wonderfully idiosyncratic James Burke documentary, The Neuron Suite. They don't make them like this anymore.
