Having viewed Tuesday night's election results, I had to go out for a long walk. Like most of you, I'd had a very long day, and while there's a certain elation from seeing the candidate I supported come to victory, I recognize that victory is accompanied by a sobering realization of the monumental task ahead. As President-elect Obama described it that evening, "the greatest of a lifetime; two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."I can't get an experience from Election Day out of my mind. It tumbles over and over and amplifies with every replay. I stood in line with a hundred other voters and struck up a conversation with the older gentleman in front of me. He happens to work in an industry related to mine, and we soon identified mutual acquaintances. He told me of his past experiences as an engineer and a career in the US Navy, aboard an icebreaker in the Arctic Ocean. He recalled this time, during the late 1950s, with nostalgia.I joked that being so near the North Pole, he must have circumnavigated many times. "No", he said, "the restrictions of ice barriers were so great that you could never do that, not even in the summer months". He went on to tell me that he visits the region as often as he can, most recently less than a year ago. His next words stunned me. "These days, you can go there and circumnavigate in a fishing boat with an outboard motor".Those somber words stayed with me in the election booth, when I went back to work and throughout the evening. I couldn't seem to jump into the victory celebration, knowing what lay ahead. No one in his or her right mind could possibly envy Mr. Obama. The man we have elected is undisputedly the leading authority on the US Constitution; this fact goes unchallenged by pundits on the left and right, and even the current White House staff agrees. This is certainly refreshing knowledge, given the beating and abuse that document has taken over the last eight years. He has the ability to organize and has proven this with incredible results. He is articulate and eloquent. He has available to him an amazing brain trust of advisors. But it's not going to be enough. There's one hope for conquering the tremendous obstacles that are faced by our nation and our world. It's all of us. Is it asking too much for us to harness the energy and fervor that got Barack Obama elected, and put it to work for four years? In order to succeed, he'll need the solid backing of an entire nation.Let's not let it end with a week of victory celebration. In fact, let's not celebrate victory until a victory in which we all share is achieved...when we can truly say that our nation and our planet is back on course.
