I'm brazenly showing how few things really embarrass me, as I'm driving Eastbound on I-10, under the Deck Park Tunnel, then exiting onto the 202 East in Phoenix, AZ. On the radio: one of my all-time favorite Rolling Stones songs, Heartbreaker, and you'll notice my speed increase as the song really begins to roll. Then, I commit the act that many other music lovers are also guilty of: singing along with the chorus (backup singer part...I let Mick do what he does best, except when Miss You comes on! Then it's balls-to-the-wall (or balls-in-the-vice, from the sound of it) falsetto with scattered vocal cracking for full embarrassment! You know, Mick was the original with the high register "Wooo-hoo-hoo" thing...Michael Jackson TOTALLY ripped off Mick Jagger! Then, of course, Michael Jackson seceded from the human race, so that's why many folks just don't know Mick started it all...and he may finish it all too, standing stoically next to Keith Richards as the world ends in apocalyptic mayhem...then they spot Michael Jackson buzzing by in his getaway vehicle, a snowmobile-engine-powered, prop-driven parasail that he bought with the proceeds he saved from the sale of his children...but I digress). I do stay in key, however, so though still possibly embarrassing, who of you hasn't done the same with one of your favorites? Uh, sing along, that is...few people can actually stay in key! Come on, admit it! CONFESS! There...don't you feel better now? Cathartic, it is, cleanses the soul! The clip ends with a cop going the other way and BS spiel on the radio following the song. (Pardon the old off-the-cuff anachronism, the casual slang reference to police officers, a one word barnyard simile (too direct for a metaphor, and not as much fun, either, but I've never turned a needy simile away from my door!)...you still can't trust most of them (cops, not similes... but beware of metaphors with limp-wristed handshakes!), and the very few exceptions can't let on they're cool...Catch 22, but that's commentary for another time!) The audio was originally monophonic, as recorded by my little Kodak C330 camera, but I converted it to CD quality PCM format, processed it with some tasteful stereo delay (after normalizing the whole soundtrack...the waveform was unnaturally solid and fat, due to the high level of road noise (not as much of a problem in a Mercedes, but I wasn't driving my Mercedes (and she wasn't in the mood either, yuk, yuk)))...(Wow! A three level deep parenthetical expression! Wow! A sentence fragment!), and then I ran the track through a digital limiter to maximize what little headroom there was. It doesn't sound very special considering all I did to it...that is, until you compare it to the original mono track...then it's quite impressive, as I blow my own horn, so to speak (I'm not really limber enough to go literal with that one!)...so enjoy this video oddity...layers of strange connection and expression belie this seemingly simplistic depiction of an act of musical reverence!
