This was created on 11/09/2008 at 4:05 pmThe b&w filming took about 6 minutes, then post-editing was 10 mins. This was a spontaneous idea to create a short clip of a NIN composition. I'm still surprised it worked out well for something so on-the-spot.I got the main idea from segments of the original video on Broken. The initial footage that I found so... facinating was the interstitials between a middle-aged, balding man trying to eat a steak as hundreds of flies encase him and his food. The linking footage was rather disturbing and ominous (some could say pointless) shots of himself posing in S&M bondage gear. As much as it ties in with the Broken theme of 'slavery & torture', I was inspired to make a clip to someone 'trying' to escape from a hostile situtation. More influences include the all-too-known torture porn/snuff genre of films: Guinea Pig, NIN's Broken, Salo, Wolf Creek, Hostel, Saw, etc. 'WHAT IF?' a victim had got away ("we are letting you get away", lol), running fearful for their own life; frantic in their search for escape before the killer comes back to realize their escape. And so the hunt begins...It was filmed on a Samsung L100 Digital Camera with video recording function. I put the b&w effect on for noir aesthetics (I REALLY couldn't see this working in colour...). Much of the video's beauty is the camera techniques employed. Recently, I've been into films with odd & eccentric camera angles/techniques/usage such as The Bourne Series, Irreversible, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, etc. I decided to make a homage to these by having a free hand-held camera as an aesthetic (00:20 - 01:25)). IMO, it contributes to the anxious, fraught tension that one may feel when trying to escape in a limited amount of time. After all, their life is at stake here...It begins with two odd hanging objects. In reality they are guitar jacks but for the purpose of story, it could be torture devices for all we know. Soon enough, the camera moves up, signifying that someone has gotten out of their chair and made a run for it.Suddenly they are running: frantically vehement trying to look everywhere for an exit. I filmed it by letting the string of the camera hang free as I spun around running around rooms in my home. As the music crescendoes, the victim seems to have found a way out: the garage door. He/she peers out for the slight sight of light - a metaphor of freedom. THEY'VE made it out.It segues into another instance of light in a different room as the music seems to calm down a bit more. This can be interpreted to be a SECOND victim unbeknowest beforehand. They've just about made their way out when suddenly, as they peer into the light, there seems to be a struggle of some sort. A finger or two is visible over the left of the lens. The perpetrator has found their victim in time to grab their head and kill them off (throat slit, perhaps? Brutal and VERY metal!). As the struggle continues, it just stops. Dead. As soon as the killer realizes it, he walks away emotionless from the body (leaving shadow in left side of screen). The body just stays there, static until the song just cuts off. Game over.Personally I find it MUCH more interesting to make videos to instrumentals as the canvas is blank for myself to work on. I just put my own interpretations of it on film; you can make your own when watching my videos.Might make a short film out of all my vids. Just wait and see... :)
