Forbidden Games Romance, composed and interpreted by Narciso Yepes and choreographed by Ana YepesThe following was written by Narciso Yepes' widow Marysia Schumlakovska and published in 1997 for the N. Yepes Tribute:At the age of 6 or 7, Narcsio wanted to make a gift to his mother. He composed something to express a child's infinite tenderness. Judging by what he grew to become, it was not words he used to express his love; he kept quiet, holding everything inside. He communicated by music, through his guitar. The child with the deep look in his eyes behind the thick glasses lived more in an interior world than in an exterior one , and from this very personal, private world was born this piece of child's play for the patron Saints' day of his motherOne year later, in the Teatro Guerra in the town of Lorca, for a benefit event, among those performing was this boy with his guitar. He played the piece he composed for his mother. On that day, he sent music into the world that would become famous without ever saying it was his own. It was so successful that besides the applause, he was showered with coins thrown by the audience that fell on his guitar, his head and hands. He later confessed to us: « I was so proud! »Later in Valencia, the adolescent 13-year-old, saw a guitarist playing his music, affirming that it was anonymous and that he was unable to say where he found it. Once again, Narciso kept quiet. He refrained from claiming authorship of this simple music that had come straight from his childish heart. He was silent. He realized that someone had copied it, having heard it at that concert in Lorca. In 1952, he gave his first concert at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. It was an unprecedented success, a revelation of the guitar. No-one had ever played in this manner. Rene Clement awaited the young concertist at the stage-door. He was moved. He wanted him to do the music for the film he had just finished. He insisted he was the only one who could do the music for this film. The film was « Forbidden Games ». The cruel reality of adults going through a war and the children living through it in their own way: making of death a game. It is a very tough film in the face of war and death and how the children see it. It needed very peculiar music. Narciso agreed to see the film and then accepted the work but with certain, very precise conditions. Without music, the film would be exceptionally hard to watch. Understanding this, Narcsio decided to humanize it with music. He demanded total liberty to do as he pleased; to start and end the music where he wanted. Renet Clement never heard the music before the day it was recorded. Narciso never gave in to Rene Clement, famous director, who could only bow before the demands of the young guitarist. He trusted him. Narciso watched the film thirty-three times. It became engraved on his memory. He absorbed every image, every breath of it's cast of characters, all of the dialogue. Then he made of the music a character in and of itself that spoke of the childrens' love, their « forbidden games » contructing a cemetery for pet animals... Finally came the day of recording, when the music was finally unveiled. Narciso used his music, composed for his mother with all his love, for the central theme, the children's scenes. Having developed this theme he inserted it as if it were another character intervening in the actions and emotions of the children. In the most dramatic and the most tender moments the music seems like a burst of light or as a shadow. He never dared to tell that this ingenious music was his own, calling it « Romance anonimo ». Recording went on all night and Rene Clement went from one surprise to another. He couldn't imagine someone could know his film better than himself. Recording ended at dawn with the film director at the musician's side. Before leaving him at the Spanish Pavillion at the Cite Universitaire in Paris, Clement embraced him saying « We've done some great work and the music will be heard around the world ». In effect, the film was presented at the Venise Festival and won all top prizes with Special Mention for the music. Clement sent a congratulatory telegram to Narciso: « We've made a work of art ». Then came the Oscar and Cannes...
