Papo Santiago started his musical journey in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the birthplace of some of the most celebrated musicians in Latin music history, including: Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Hector Lavoe, and Papo Lucca. Santiago pursued a degree in music at Universidad Interamericana, San German, Puerto Rico. Before completing his studies, he was recruited to play baritone sax with "La Terrifica" by its bandleader Joe Rodriguez. "La Terrifica" spun off from "La Sonora Poncena" in the early 70's and paved the way for Santiago's incursion into the world of salsa. The band's international acclaim took Santiago to the demanding salsa public of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and New York among others. After forging his musical reputation, he became a sought after musician, sharing the stage with upper brass of Afro-Caribbean music, including "Fania All-Stars", "La Sonora Poncena", "Ismael Miranda", "Marvin Santiago", Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Carlos "Cano" Estremera, Henry Fiol. Lalo Rodriguez, Eddie Santiago, and Nino Segarra.Along the way, Papo Santiago has demonstrated an uncanny ability to take on new challenges, and become a bona fide bandleader. After mastering the saxophone and all its variants, he honed the craft of flute playing with Banda Municipal de Ponce 1985. Santiago moved to the city of Chicago in the late 1980's where he found himself having to carve a niche in the city's music circles. It didn't take long for his talents to be recognized by the top tier of local musicians, including Orquesta Yambu, Ases del Merengue, Joe Rendon and friends, La Tira and Cuatrisimo. Cuban flutist Jose Fajardo dubbed him "the child prodigy" after discovering his skills on the instrument while touring the Windy City. Santiago went on to join the experimental jazz ensemble Kalinda. The group's first recording "Kalinda Kaliente" was named in 1997 by the Chicago Tribune as one of the year's ten best in the Jazz category.

With groups such as Public Enemy rapping about their respect for the Nation of Islam, to people such as Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest embracing mainstream Islam, the religion seems to be a recurrent theme in the genre, both impacting lyrics and lives. One artist more recently touched by Islam is Eric Schrody, better known in music circles as Everlast. While Everlast began his musical career as a rap artist, he has recently shown himself to have much greater depth and diversity. His current album, Whitey Ford Sings the Blues (currently ranked #49 on billboard's charts after peaking at #9) exhibits this in its reflective and somewhat philosophical tone, showing glimpses of the influence Islam has had on his life. What follows is an interview in which Everlast discusses his journey to Islam and the challenges he faces as a new Muslim. Mike Relm is an American DJ, turntablist, and VJ from San Francisco, California. He has performed with notable hip-hop artists Money Mark, Gift of Gab, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and D-Sharp. As a solo artist, Relm is known for live performances which feature a series of audio mashups paired with video images, manipulated in real-time with a turntable-like device (e.g. Pioneer DVJ1000).A long time veteran of the Bay Area DJ scene, Ajax has always been one of SF's favorite DJ's. Roxette is a Swedish pop duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle.Although well known as a duo in their native Sweden since the mid 1980s (where the group has had 17 Top 10 hits), the duo achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s. Roxette had four US No. 1 singles, two No. 2 singles. The group has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) with two platinum albums - 1988's Look Sharp! (released in the U.S. in 1989) and 1991's Joyride, as well as two gold singles - "The Look" and "It Must Have Been Love".Roxette's success was even bigger in Europe and South America, where their number of Top 10 hits was higher and continued after their decrease in the US in 1992. Each of their 7 studio albums as well as their several "Best of" CDs received gold, platinum or multi-platinum status in Europe and Latin-America.By the time singer/songwriters Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson came together officially as Roxette, both were established artists in Sweden. They met in 1979 while in separate bands. Over the years - as Fredriksson moved from Strul and MaMas Barn (Mama's Children) to going solo and Gessle performed with his band, the popular Gyllene Tider, and made two solo albums - the two encountered each other repeatedly in local music circles. In 1981, Fredriksson sang for the first time with Gyllene Tider on stage and was featured as a background vocalist for a Swedish-language album the band released in 1982, which brought Gyllene Tider its first Rockbjörnen award as a Best Swedish Group, and for a Swedish-language solo album Gessle released in 1983.While working on her first solo album, Fredriksson performed more background vocals and some solo work for Gyllene Tider's next album, The Heartland Café. Some fans, albeit not Roxette themselves, consider that album to be the first Roxette project. According to liner notes written by Gessle on a 1990 re-issue of the album, the group's first English-language release was in response to interest expressed by Capitol Records, an American label affiliated with Gyllene Tider's parent EMI Group. Though Gessle had written one English-language song that appeared on a 1982 album by ex-ABBA singer Frida, it was, in fact, music set to a Dorothy Parker poem. Writing songs in English for Gyllene Tider was an attempt to reach into the lucrative American market....[Wikipeddia]
