Rooskie had a bad habit of running off at the very beginning of an HTM routine although he would be fine once he had settled. I tried this new start to a routine where I kept him in the front position and tried to keep contact with him by getting him to target my fingers until he was settled. The bend and small circles helped here.

To teach a dog to target just wave a target stick in front of him and click (or say DE if you are using Bridge and Target) when his nose touches the target. Like many Papillons Rooskie tends to be afraid of sticks and prefers a soft target stick --- like a feather duster.

Author Mary Moffat's little Papillon Rooskie learned circles simply by following food around. Here he circles an umbrella and shows a photo opportunity. In this clip Mary uses not clicker, but bridge and target, which is her preferred method of teaching.
