Toucherby Vinko GlobokarPerformed by Morris Palterat the University of KentuckySingletary Center for the ArtsApril 11, 2007"Toucher" (1973) illustrates the French-born avant-gardist Vinko Globokar's delight in combining spoken and instrumental sound to the point where the elements seem to form a single language. The text is from Bertolt Brecht's powerful play, The Life of Galileo, a series of short dialectical scenes involving discussions with the great astronomer/philosopher on the nature of faith and heroism. A single performer reads all the parts (including stage directions) in French, and accompanies him- or herself on seven instruments of choice, using only fingers and palm of the hand (hence "Toucher"). The attempt is to integrate instrumental and vocal sounds so that the instruments themselves seem to be "speaking."Morris is the Artistic Director of Ensemble 64.8 (UAF percussion ensemble), the Artistic Director for the University of Alaska Fairbanks New Music Festival, the World Music Artistic Coordinator for the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and the Co-Artistic Director for the SoundON Modern Music Festival held each year in San Diego.More info about Morris Palter at:http://morrispalter.com/Please check out more videos in my channel!

Broken Drumby Matthew BurtnerPerformed by Morris Palterat the University of KentuckySingletary Center for the ArtsApril 11, 2007This piece was composed in 2004 for brake drum and computer.(Notes from the composer)I found a car "brake drum" on the side of the road and decided to make this bit of car wreckage into a musical instrument. The metamorphosis from garbage into sonic art object attracted me. Musically the piece focuses on two ideas: 1) the acoustic sonorities of the brake drum, and 2) the "broken drum" metaphor represented by rhythmic systems that in various ways are imperfectly constructed or disintegrated through cross-polymetric relationships. The piece was written for Morris Palter.Morris is the Artistic Director of Ensemble 64.8 (UAF percussion ensemble), the Artistic Director for the University of Alaska Fairbanks New Music Festival, the World Music Artistic Coordinator for the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and the Co-Artistic Director for the SoundON Modern Music Festival held each year in San Diego.More info about Morris Palter at:http://morrispalter.com/Please check out more videos in my channel!

XY (Part 1 of 2)by Michael GordonPerformed by Morris Palterat the University of KentuckySingletary Center for the ArtsApril 11, 2007The title "XY" (1997) refers to the X- and Y-shape patterns made by the performer's sticks as they negotiate the setup. The work itself is founded upon various polyrythmic ratios (3:2, 5:4, 6:5) which in turn expand to form different melodic patterns throughout the trajectory of the work. For much of the time, as one hand is getting louder, the other hand is getting softer and vice versa. "XY" can be performed on any of the same five instruments whether they be wooden, skinned, or mnetallic.Morris is the Artistic Director of Ensemble 64.8 (UAF percussion ensemble), the Artistic Director for the University of Alaska Fairbanks New Music Festival, the World Music Artistic Coordinator for the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and the Co-Artistic Director for the SoundON Modern Music Festival held each year in San Diego.More info about Morris Palter at:http://morrispalter.com/Please check out more videos in my channel!
