He is an ethnic Manchurian Chinese. His most famous work is the songs written for "The Dream of the Red Chamber", a Chinese TV series in 1987. The film made the song and Jet Li very popular in China. 1982 was really a turning point of Jet Li's life. Prof Tseng, has been recognized for his breadth of achievement in opera, song and education. Born in Chang-hwa, Taiwan, he studied with Robert Scholz and Paul Dai at the National Taiwan Normal University, and Franco Navarette and Maria de Los Angeles at the Royal Madrid Music Conservatory. Latter, he further studied in Los Angeles University, under the guidance of Dr. Jan Propper for opera and singing and Maria Carta for opera directing. Prof. Tseng has given critically acclaimed operatic performances in Europe, U.S.A., Japan, Taiwan and Asia. As a highly regarded conductor, Prof Tseng studied with Franco Ferrara in Siena and has conducted numerous opera and oratorios in Taiwan and Asia. In 1990, Prof. Tseng made history as the first Taiwanese to be invited by China to conduct and direct an opera, La Traviata, produced by the National Central Opera Company to celebrate the Asian Olympic in Beijing. In the same year, he conducted the first opera ever performed at the Grand Theatre of the New Culture Centre in Hong Kong. In 1991.Prof. Tseng founded the Taipei Opera Theatre in 1971 and has premiered more than 30 operas in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, such as :Dido and Aeneas, Magic Flute, Idomeneo, La Clemenza di Tito, Fidelio, Der Freichuetz, Hansel und Gretel. L'Elisir d'Amore, Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto,, Orphee aux enfers, Faust, Pagliacci, Cavalleria Ruscana, Il Segreto di Susanna, El Retablo de Maese Pedro, Mazart und Salieiri, Gianni Schicchi, The Flying Ducthman , Dialogues des Carmelites and so forth....。 He was the director of the Music Research Institute and the head of the Music Department at National Taiwan Normal University from 1982 to 1985. As a visiting professor, he tought in Iowa State University, and gave his lectures at Louvain University in Belgium, as well as at the Universities of Leeds and Cambridge in U.K。Prof. Tseng has worked closely with musicians in Asia. All the musicians and artistes who have worked with him appreciated his fine conducting, profound musical knowledge and educational enthusiasm.
