The work gets its name from a myth about a town in the state of Ohio, called Bowling Green. There is a huge swamp in the town, now known as the Black Swamp and there was a rumour that the Devil once stayed there for a period of time. In the 1860s a troop of soldiers ventured into the swamp to investigate, and even though they were more than well equipped to face it, they never came back. A second troop was then dispatched to locate them. They too were never seen again. Throughout the work, I tried to convey the spirits of the dead soldiers slowly rising up from underground, and haunting the swamp, trying to escape the possessed land.My aim was to create a constant build up throughout the piece, and this was achieved by starting with the double basses in the very extreme lower register, at a very quiet dynamic. The two bar phrase first heard in the double basses is the initial motif from which the following contrapuntal material is derived. The sound of the double bass section represents the murkiness of the swamp. This ambiguous opening is then followed, one by one by the different string entries with contrapuntal melodies, leading up to a total of 10 different string layers. The brass section enters with sustaining chords as the woodwind takes over the contrapuntal idea. The military figure on the snare drum then enters, which is a motif that gradually becomes more and more prominent throughout the work. This rhythmic motif is passed through the brass, and the first climax of the piece arrives at bar 79. Both the military motif and the initial motif are then heard against each other as the full orchestra builds up to a final forte-fortissimo climax, which ends the pieceRecorded in a workshop by the BBC NOW in 2004 © copyright Tristan Evans 2004
