A traditional Turkish hymms songThis version is from Sami ÖzerSong lyrics:Classical and Traditional Sufi Musicfrom Turkey and the Middle East Sami Özer was born in Istanbul in 1950. From 1967 to 1970 he studied classical and religious music with the renowned master and composer Amir Ateş. In 1970 Amir Ateş introduced Sami Özer to the famous master Emin Ongan who, impressed and moved by Sami Özers breathtaking voice, accepted him as a preferred student at the Istanbul Üsküdar Conservatory. Between 1971-81 Sami Özer studied classical music at the Istanbul Üsküdar Conservatory. During this period and until 1985, date of Emin Ongans death, he studied, worked, performed and composed with his master Emin Ongan. In 1974, Sami Özer won the first price in the golden voice competition (Altın Ses). He also won the TRT radio exams in classical music and for a few years, worked with them, singing and performing. In 1985, Sami Özer, with his strong background in classical music and religious chanting, discovered the Islamic mystical heritage. He followed the teachings of Sayyid Safer Dal Hazretleri and while he continued developing and singing his classical repertoire, he deepened his knowledge of Sufi poetry and chants and expanded the previously existing known collections. In 1998 and 1999, Sami Özer joined with the rock group MFÖ Group for several concerts. Along with Mazhar Alanson, he sang the songs "Bu ne biçim hikâye böyle (What kind of a story is this), Fırtınalar (Tempests), as well as a solo improvised poem for the movie Her Şey Güzel Olacak (Alls well that ends well)(Mazhar Alanson and Cem Yılmaz). Sami Özer also worked with Fahir Atakoğlu, the pianist and composer. Since 1986, the artist has been working with the Türk Tasavvuf Musikisi ve Folklorunu Araştırma ve Yaşatma Vakfı, an organization dedicated to the preservation of and research into the Sufi mystical music heritage, headquartered in Istanbul. He has performed many concerts in Turkey and abroad, among them, Reims (1988), Köln, Germany (1989), Abdi Ipekci Hall a concert for the benefit of Bosnia (1992), Athens (1994), New York city (1994), Toronto University (1996), Sarajevo (2001), where he performed with the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra, Zagreb (2002). A born musician and a man who lives for music, Sami Özers love of music manifested itself at a very early age and his love was supported by a very special gift and a perfect ear. As a young boy, he taught himself the adhan, simply by listening to the muezzins, who since the advent of Islam have been reciting the Islamic call to prayer. He taught himself the religious chants, the various maqams or modes that rule Middle Eastern music and built for himself a wide repertoire made of religious hymns, classical songs and his own compositions. Today, Sami Savni Özer is recognized as the highest reference in Classical Middle Eastern and Sufi Mystical music in Turkey and Eastern Europe, and his current goal, with this last recording of Ilahis or hymns, is to reach to a wide and varied audience in the West.
